Overture in B Flat
(1966)
Caesar
Giovannini
Written in traditional
Third
Third
Suite is
any early work by one of
the most highly regarded band composers of the past 40 years. Jager is known for the
incorporation of humor
in his compositions – an element displayed in this piece
through
rhythmic
manipulation bordering on perverse!
Festivo
(1968)
Vaclav Nelhybel
A prolific Czech-born composer,
Nelhybel
published
over 400 works in his lifetime with another 200 still in the
publication
process. His output
includes concertos,
operas, chamber music, and numerous compositions for symphony
orchestra,
symphonic band, and chorus. He
often
wrote modal melodies and had a knack for creating great complexity from
simple
material.
As Summer Was
Just Beginning (1994)
Larry
D. Daehn
As
Summer Was
Just Beginning
acknowledges the life of James Dean, a promising film star who was
killed in
car accident in 1955 at the age of 24. It is loosely based on the
British folk
song “The Winter is Past, and the Summer’s Here at
Last”.
Beyond The
Higher Skies (1996) Robert Sheldon
This energetic and melodic work is
our
tribute to
the 100th anniversary of the Wright
Brothers’ achievement
that will
be celebrated on December 17.
A sometimes forgotten aspect of
American
military
music is the marching song from the Revolutionary War.
Simple, but stirring, the tunes were based on
various folk songs, bugle calls, and drum cadences of the times. Days of Glory, although not derivative
from any particular source, is an attempt to capture those heroic times
through
the musical style of the period.
