FMU administers placement tests to all new freshmen and transfer students who have not received credit for an introductory, college-level English. Placement testing is MANDATORY. The test is administered by the FMU Office of Counseling and Testing. Appointments can be made by calling 843-673-9707. Failure to take the test could result in automatic placement into a course that does not count as credit toward general education requirements.

English Composition Exemption Examinations — All freshmen are required to have an English placement score on file either in the Office of Advising and Retention or the Office of Counseling and Testing. See the description of "Freshman English" in this catalog for further information on placement in composition courses. Students may challenge placement in English 100, 111, or 112 by taking a written examination before the beginning of the semester. This examination takes two hours and costs $15.
