The Smith University Center Gallery cases allow for secure display of relatively large two-dimensional works behind glass. There are four cases, each with a neutral fabric hanging wall 94" high by 240" wide (approximately 8'x20') elevated two feet above the floor.
One foot in front of the wall of each case are four interlocking track doors whose 2" frames effectively divide the display area of each case into four windows 88" high by 57" wide. Artists tend to naturally install one sizable work or several smaller works behind each of the sixteen windows. Since these patio-door sized windows are only divided by 2" vertical frames, works wider than 57" can be displayed with only a moderate compromize for the viewer.
Lighting is provided by fixtures
above and below the
artworks within the display cases themselves, so lighting is very
oblique. This minimizes undesirable reflection in glazed works, but
also tends to exaggerate the relief
in sculptural or assemblage pieces -- an effect which may be used to
advantage.
